Starworks: Life with Prosthetics
Starworks is an ongoing initiative from Devices For Dignity to discover unmet needs for children with upper or lower limb prosthetics. Workshops across the country brought together kids, families, healthcare professionals and industry experts to co-design new solutions to the everyday problems faced by the children and families.
In addition to helping facilitate one of the workshops, my role afterwards was to summarise the findings into editorial illustrations that could accompany the final report, hopefully making it far easier for readers to quickly grasp the problems raised.
The first illustration draws on insights from both parents and children received across several workshops. It shows a day in the life of a child with a prosthesis, focusing on the key moments where their life is impacted as well as times when they have to take on a level of responsibility and self-management unusual for children.
This illustration demonstrates the gulf in awareness between Industry/Academia/NHS and the normal day- to-day needs and issues facing families of children with prosthetics. Starworks acts as a creative space to bridge the gap between these stakeholders, allowing them to share their valuable knowledge.
